About

Lee Pengelly is a professional photographer based in the Southwest of England. He specialises in landscape, architecture and food photography. He also shoots commercial projects for private and business clients, and shoots a number of weddings across Southwest England each year. He can supply a wide variety of high quality, creative imagery for use in advertising, editorial and PR by commission or directly from his own picture library of over 40,000 images.
Lee started taking pictures in 1996, after a college course and B.F.P (Bureau of Freelance Photographers) study course. He quickly realised that this is what he wanted to do for a living. Between 1996 and 2000 he honed his skills and built up a range of clients for his work. By late 2000 he had given up the day job and turned pro.
In 2003 Lee began producing books for Halsgrove Publishing including Devon Moods, Devons Beautiful Buildings, Spirit of Devon, Portrait of Exeter, Portrait of Plymouth, Romantic South Devon Coast and the soon to be published Romantic North Devon Coast with 3 more titles planned for 2011/2012.
In 2004 Lee set up Silverscene Photography Workshops and now runs a variety of landscape based workshops in the UK for keen photographers of all levels.

Influence & Inspiration
My inspiration comes from many sources, the main one being the natural world itself. A question I am often asked is - Why do you take photos ?, this has to be one of the hardest questions to answer, there is no definitive answer. I cannot fail to be moved by a beautifully lit landscape, it’s a moment where I am completely absorbed in the atmosphere where everything slows down, something special happens in those moments. This is the closest I can get to explaining why without sounding loopy !.
I am influenced by many photographers including Joe Cornish, David Noton, Charlie Waite and David Ward although I find inspiration everywhere, books, magazines, TV and films and of course other photographers.

Equipment
I have used various equipment over the years including 35mm, medium format, large format and panoramic cameras to my current digital set up. I love new gear but to be honest the camera and lens is only a tool to capture the scene. I tend to use what is apt at the time.
I cannot deny that digital capture is the way forward and these days I am 100% committed to the medium. I started using digital cameras in 2004 and used a Nikon system for many years. I have since jumped ship to the Canon full frame digital system and currently use a Canon 1DSMK11 with 17-40mm F4 L , 28-70mm F2.8 L, 70-200mm F4 L and 85mm F1.8 with Lee Filters, Canon speedlite flash, 2GB and 4GB CF cards, a lowepro backpack and Manrotto tripod. Lee has also recently started using the new Lee Big Stopper x10 Neutral Density filter for his landscape and architectural work.

“I have a passion for the landscape and it’s the subject that got me to pick up the camera, I will always love it and always return to it. I love to be out in the great outdoors in all weathers capturing the changing light. Living in Plymouth means I am fortunate to be close to the stunning scenery of Dartmoor and the South coast of Devon. I love shooting at dawn and dusk when the light is at it’s best and just being there soaking up the atmosphere is very special for me, the resulting pictures are my record of those moments”.

I hope you enjoy my work, and thank you for visiting my website.
